New Yorkers Cajoling Trains By Staring Into Darkened Tunnels

When I stare into darkened tunnels
Train delays and standing in wait
Humidity blanketing, physically
Smothering assault on serenity
I stare, not to coax the metal snake into being
I stare, out of hope
Focused on one end-goal
A determined prayer for deliverance
An air-conditioned car to soothe me back whole
Sunglasses fogged, clothes stuck to skin, I’m drenched
